Program Details
Electrical engineering deals with the development and manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, and the design and implementation of electrical generation and distribution. Electrical engineers often work at computer terminals designing electrical networks. Others work in manufacturing plants, or on giant projects such as subway systems or electric power grids that carry electricity throughout Canada or other countries. Electrical engineers are often research and development specialists and work in laboratories. Many choose careers in sales and marketing of electrical and electronic devices.
The Faculty of Engineering offers a uniquely designed 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree program in Electrical Engineering at the Thunder Bay campus which is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). A co-op education/internship Bachelor of Engineering degree is also available.
Students can enter the first year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree program directly from high school, or if additional academic preparation is required, by successfully completing the Common Year in Applied Science. The structure of this program at the Thunder Bay campus permits students to complete the requirements of an Engineering Technology Diploma in Electrical Engineering by the end of the second year of the Bachelor of Engineering degree program. At this stage;
The curriculum in the Electrical Engineering degree program is designed to teach fundamental physical sciences, as well as the more practical areas of design and operation of industrial control systems, communication systems, electronic circuits, and the generation and distribution of electrical power.
The first two years of the Bachelor of Engineering degree program in Electrical Engineering at the Thunder Bay campus emphasizes the fundamentals of circuit theory, control systems, instrumentation, and telecommunications, thus preparing the student for positions covering broad employment areas in electrical engineering such as the electrical power industry, the communications industry and industrial electronics.
The final two years of the degree program at the Thunder Bay campus extend the technologists' capabilities into more advanced conceptual and design phases of engineering. This is accomplished through a series of core and elective courses, engineering design, and a major project which enables the student to emphasize a particular area, such as computer applications, communications networks, industrial control or electrical power distribution.
Faculty members of the Department of Electrical Engineering are specialists in their fields of endeavour and offer current information related to theory and practice by conducting research and their liaison with organizations on a local, provincial, national, and international basis.
The Department of Electrical Engineering strongly supports the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and encourages students to become active members of this organization.

- You may choose to obtain work experience since you have graduated with marketable skills from an accredited Electrical Engineering Technology program. After acquiring valuable work experience, you may apply to return to Lakehead University to complete your engineering degree, or
- You may choose to enter the workforce as an Electrical Engineering Technologist.

Specific prerequisites for the Bachelor of Engineering degree program:
OSSD graduates who do not meet the admission requirements to the first year of an engineering degree program, may be considered for admission to the Common Year in Applied Science. Upon successful completion of the Common Year in Applied Science, with an average of 60% or better and a minimum average of 60% in Mathematics 1050, 1070, and Mathematics 1052, 1072, you may apply to the Lakehead University Bachelor of Engineering Degree program of your choice.
Specific prerequisites for the Common Year in Applied Science:
Students who do not meet the above requirements will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, a minimum of 6 Grade 12 U or M courses, including the program specific prerequisites, with a minimum 70% average.
Specific prerequisites for the Bachelor of Engineering degree program:
- 1 credit Grade 12 U in each of: Advanced Functions, Physics, Chemistry and English; 2 additional Grade 12 U or M credits; Grade 12 U Calculus & Vectors is strongly recommended; 1 credit in Grade 12 U or M Math, Science or Technological Education is recommended.
OSSD graduates who do not meet the admission requirements to the first year of an engineering degree program, may be considered for admission to the Common Year in Applied Science.
