Program Details
Pursuing a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc Eng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lakehead University is a great path to a sound future. Our program provides students with the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge in the field through a combination of coursework and research. Students in the MSc Eng program have the opportunity to work collaboratively with world-class researchers and institutes, state of the art facilities and all within a collegial learning environment. The small class sizes and extensive instructor-student interaction creates a positive learning environment that fosters student success. The program offers three routes to the degree:
- The thesis option fosters develops the independent research abilities of students. These objectives are achieved through a combination of course work and research. This option is ideal for students seeking to continue on to doctoral studies as well as students interested in research and development careers within industry. All thesis students must enrol full-time in the program.
- In addition, there are two course-based options that combine advanced level coursework with either a research project or paper. The course based options allow students broad exposure to advanced topics within the field as well as the opportunity to complete a research project or investigate an emerging field of engineering through the completion of a research paper. Both full-time and flex-time options are available for course-based students.
Optional Co-op
Students in the course-based MSc option are eligible to apply for the cooperative education experience after completion of four graduate half-courses from the approved list of MSc courses with an average of at least 75 and no failed courses. Co-op employment for a minimum of two terms (8 months) must be successfully completed to satisfy co-op requirements for the degree; however students may be employed on co-op for up to a maximum of four terms (16 months) as part of the program. Students must enroll and complete the requirements for Engineering 5990 and 5991; the additional work terms Engineering 5992 and Engineering 5993 are optional. Co-op courses do not apply toward the 5.0 FCE requirements for the MSc degree

Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission must be graduates of a recognized university, college, or institute as well as show evidence of scholarly achievement. Except where otherwise stated in the Admission Requirements of a particular program, degree students must have a four year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second class standing (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent.
An applicant holding a degree other than one in the discipline area to which admission is sought will be considered on the basis of courses taken and academic standing. A Qualifying Year at the undergraduate level may be required to meet the admission standards. Courses taken as part of a Qualifying Year can not be used as credit towards a graduate degree.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission. No candidate will be admitted unless the academic unit recommends admission. All applicants will be advised by the Office of Graduate Studies in writing of their admission status.
