Make up for Film and TV Diploma Program
Term 1 Term 1 provides a comprehensive introduction to fundamental visual arts skills as they relate to film production and specifically makeup artistry. Additionally, exploration of stage, film and television history, and the history of makeup art will provide relevance and fluency to the language of the production environment the student is about to enter. You acquire a solid understanding of fundamental skills and principles that include photography, drawing, colour theory, anatomy of the human face, stage makeup, corrective makeup, glamour makeup, set etiquette, digital image manipulation and design (Photoshop), modern product knowledge including acquisition, and health and safety issues related to product usage. This term culminates in a final practical exam and a final written exam. Subjects Covered
You further explore the concepts and skills introduced in the previous term but immersion into both the theoretical and practical aspects of media production and the makeup artist's role as creator, collaborator and support provider is the main focus. This shift to an understanding of 'Narrative-specific' Makeup Theory is presented via the development of story specific skill-sets - 'out of kit effects' which include blood and dirt application, bruising theory and application, two and three dimensional wounds and burns. Further, the developmental history of period makeup styles is explored, airbrushing is introduced, and makeup theory and techniques as they apply to fashion photography and the fashion industry, including makeup for various print mediums, are presented. Basic hairstyling is also introduced. This term culminates in a final practical exam and a final written exam. |

Term 3
There are a number of assignments and exercises within this term that allow you to hone your research skills and your painting skills while also providing you with the opportunity to stretch creatively - this includes fantasy glamour and cultural applications, as well as beauty photo shoot, where you collaborate with a professional photographer. Bald cap application, wig styling, hair laying, stretch and stipple aging, life casting and sculpting are all introduced. These are essential skill sets for independent and low-budget film projects - typically, your earliest employment opportunities. Additionally, you'll have opportunities to work on film projects in collaboration with other departments around VFS, giving you chances to apply your knowledge of how a film set functions, and to collectively practice your role as makeup artists within the crew. During these shoots, you must have a comprehensive understanding of film terminology, set etiquette, and the ability to do script breakdown for makeup and continuity. This term culminates in a final practical exam and a final written exam. Subjects Covered
You continue building on your creative skills and begin developing strengths in technically advanced areas of specialization. The creation of three-dimensional appliances will be a feature focus, as will the principles of prosthetics application to the performer. You will also develop your hair laying skills in the term's advanced hair laying classes. You'll have more chances to hone your craft and get on-set experience, with many opportunities to work on student productions. This term culminates in a final practical exam and a final written exam. Term 5
Term 5 provides a comprehensive immersion into aspects of specialized makeup art skills as they relate to the fabrication of Full Head Masks and Anatomical Props. Focus is on the creation of full head masks and the creation / application of ventilated hair pieces, as well as the care and application of human hair lace front wigs. Additionally, you will learn to create, apply and paint foam latex appliances.
This term culminates in a final practical exam and a final written exam.
Subjects Covered
In this final term, your main focus will be on the completion of your portfolio (which is a year-long project) and on your portfolio project, which is an assignment in which you select one of several options and then spend approximately 40-80 hours developing. You will be allowed a greater degree of both creative and logistical autonomy in order to realize final makeup projects, both within and outside the school environment. Some students may elect to stream into an onsite industry mentorship program instead of working on a final makeup portfolio project, either with a local special effects shop or on the set of a VFS produced film. However, both these mentorship options are subject to availability.
Skills essential to the creation of makeup 'props', like duplicated body parts and dummy heads are introduced in this term. As well, custom bald cap manufacture, dental casting and veneer construction is introduced.
You will also explore career prep fundamentals like budgeting, resume-building, job search techniques, and union standards and requirements.
This term culminates in a final written exam.
